May 01, 2024 - May 31, 2024
If you are having trouble with the app, contact Keving Millar at 607-687-3263 or email at kjmilow@yahoo.com. The Owego Rotary Club is sponsoring a May 2024 Community Care 100K Walk. May is National Walking Month and the weather is getting nicer. The walk will be held from May 1 until May 31. Tioga State Bank is a sponsor and will donate $25 to a Tioga County food bank for each participant who walks 100K( 62 miles) in the month of May, up to a total of $2,500. Participants benefit from the health effects of walking and will be helping residents who are in need of food. Local businesses benefit by getting positive publicity for helping raise funds for food banks. The tracking of miles per person will be done using a Nike app called Nike Run Club which will be live on April 1 and will be a challenge called Owego Rotary May 2024 100K Care Challenge. It's an app that can be downloaded to your phone at https://www.nike.com/nrc-app . The challenge will be available on the app on April 1 to sign up on and get the feel of how the works. You can walk any time in May that's convenient for you, just make sure you have your cell phone with you when you walk. There may be some prizes each week for categories like oldest walker, youngest walker, most miles that week, etc. I can use your help in soliciting prizes like gift certificates from local businesses. There will be award photos at any business that donates a gift. If you have any prize category or gift suggestions please let me know. If you have any questions please contact Kevin Millar by phone or text at 607-687-3263 or email at kjmilow@yahoo.com. |

Choose this option if you are attending the meeting AND are not purchasing food. The speaker for the May 7 Rotary Dinner Meeting is Krissy Boys, retiring director of the Mundy Wildflower Gardens at Cornell Botanic Garden. Krissy will speak about her career at Cornell and the importance of native plants to the ecosystem.Bio: My enchantment with the forest ecosystem of the Northeast has led me to the Mundy Wildflower Garden, a flood plain forest along Fall Creek, a protected waterway. I spend most of my time working with volunteers and students. We are removing invasive species, collecting local seeds, and propagating native plants for gardens, plant sales, and natural areas restoration. It is my pleasure to introduce the plant communities of the Mundy Wildflower Garden to students from Cornell and other colleges, students in the 2nd through 12th grades, and community groups. The wildflower garden supports one intern for 12 weeks during the growing season and student workers any time of the year. I enjoy working with the natural areas stewards and assisting the education staff with garden interpretation. I teach classes and workshops at Cornell Botanic Gardens and lecture at plant conferences and gardening clubs throughout the northeast and mid—Atlantic states. I have been a gardener and land steward by trade for 28 years. Previously, I was the gardener at the Brandywine River Museum in Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania, and the land steward in the Laurels Preserve on lands held in perpetuity by the Brandywine Conservancy. Currently, I serve as a steering committee member of the Finger Lakes Native Plant Society, and have served in that capacity for 18 years.Zoom link: Click hereRSVPs are due no later than the Friday before at 5:30pm. |
