On April 28, 2023, OFA’s FFA students joined OR members for a morning of planting trees. With the generous help of TCSW employees, 75 native tree saplings soon dotted the preserve.
To celebrate Arbor Day 2023, Owego Free Academy’s Future Farmers of America joined Rotary Club members for a morning of tree planting at the Canawanna Nature Preserve. With the generous help of Tioga County Soil and Water employees, seventy-five native bush and tree saplings including hazelnut, red oak, arrowwood, elderberry, and maple trees soon dotted the Preserve.
A bee and butterfly garden has been planted atop the hügelkultur that was built by club members.
Wood chip lined paths now wind through the wooded area. Arrow-wood, blackberry, currants, elderberry, hackberry, nannyberry, elderberry, raspberries and more have been planted, providing wildlife with food and shelter.
Guided tours by a noted area naturalist have educated the public, identifying plants, both native and invasive along the trails. Click here for more info on ecological impact of invasive plants.
Thanks to an Eagle Scout project several benches are placed throughout the area, providing great opportunities for birdwatchers.
