Orv introduced Sam Corey, our District Governor Elect
In addition to Joao, here for his last visit, were a number of people associated with the RYLA experience; Nancy Cook, Monica Rigucci, Lisa Rigucci, Jessica Hernandez, Becky Hernandez, Kiley Davis, and Lindsay Schneider
Bill and Irene Moon brought their grandchildren, Michael and Patrick
Carl and Carolyn led us in, “R-O-T-A-R-Y”
meets tomorrow morning at 7:30 AM
John Spencer thanked everyone who participated. We will not know how much we made until December. The attendance was down, probably due to the holiday weekend. Steve got on the golf channel for cooking speedies as did Maria Fronek. Harry was late.
Carolyn passed out the statements. Please make the collection process easy.
NEXT WEEK’S SPEAKER will be Mike Slavetskas.
Joao enjoyed his last week with the graduation parties. He is looking forward to his trip to CA with his family. After he comes home, he will leave for home in four days. He wants to attend college to become a PE teacher and coach.
In honor of the new RI President, Orv asked questions about Korea.
The Kiwanis Golf Tournament is on July 30. So far we have one team entered.
LAURA BETCHER IS HOME FROM AFGHANISTAN!
Alice contributed $52. One year ago, she and Charlie had a goal of getting the house ready for the family to come this weekend. With workers working on the bathroom as she was at the meeting, they are making it as the first start to arrive this evening. They have done a wonderful job with the old family farmhouse.
Merle competed in a triathlon (and it wasn’t coffee, walking and donuts)
Carolyn introduced the program by speaking about RYLA and the selection process. Our district has had a program for 26 years and John Jones was instrumental in getting this started. He had experienced it in his former club. After the school guidance people made recommendations, Carolyn, Carole, Laura, and Fred Strauss met with the candidates.
JESSICA HERNANDEZ told about some of the discussions they had. They tried to figure out what makes a leader; to be there for others, to organize. They tried new activities such as SCUBA. They discussed with others the challenges that teenagers face.
LISA RIGUCCI showed us the organizer that they were given. They had a very full schedule and met a lot of people. They broke into small groups for discussion and discussed issues that are close to them such as high school violence, drugs, and sex. It was interesting to see how personalities meshed. There were few dull moments and they had a dance which did not have wall flowers as would a typical high school dance.
LINDSAY SCHNEIDER mentioned the schedule which involved getting up early and attending many presentations. They developed trust in each other in a very short period of time due to the intensity of the experiences that they shared.
KILEY DAVIS discussed the social aspects. You first started with the people that you know from your own school, but soon expanded into the larger group. They had a talent show and each group has to come up with a skit.
