VISITORS AND GUESTS:

MUSIC:

Carl and Carolyn led us EXCELLENTLY in “Vive le Rotary”.

FINES:

Fred started out by fining himself, then all those who did not participate in the Strawberry Festival and those who did but did not purchase a Rotary shortcake.

RYLA:

Carolyn announced that the RYLA students are headed off to Hartwick this weekend for a week-long leadership program. They will come to the Club to share their experiences on July 17.

BIKE TIOGA:

Al spoke about the program and the brochures.

STRAWBERRY FESTIVAL:

Matt chaired this again this year and spent over 12 hours there (in addition to all of the other work that goes into making this a success). He particularly thanked John Spencer for being there to set-up, clean-up, and whenever else he was needed. The Club participation was excellent and it was our most successful year with a profit of $2753!

EXCHANGE STUDENT:

Suzanne had a very busy week (including the arrival of her family – who she said wanted to go to Wall Mart, but they nodded in ascent when I questioned who wanted to go). It was the first time Suzanne has seen her family in ten months which simultaneously seems long and like a day.

PROGRAM:

Dave Woodburn spoke about the “Angel Action” work camp. This is being organized through Tina Thomas at Tioga Opportunities. 141 youth will be coming into our community during the week of July 22 -28. They will stay at OFA and do work around the village. 84 households applied for assistance. 16 have been chosen with another 17 as back-up. The young people are coming from all around the country. Volunteers are needed to help before and after bringing supplies to the houses which will be worked on. There will be a fund-raising concert for the local youth groups involved to help raise money for what they are providing for the volunteers. Terry has been very involved in this project. This organization was founded in after the 1977 flood in Big Thompson Canyon in CO. They have other programs, some of which provide services outside of the US and Canada.

50/50 Ann (because she had one of Orv’s tickets!)

Light Reading: One of the books I received for Father’s Day was Little Tiny Teeth by Aaron Elkins. Linda got me started on this author who has a few series. This is his latest with Gideon Oliver as the protagonist, “The Skeleton Detective”. It takes place on the Amazon. It is hard to believe that the Amazon is 7 miles wide. The Mississippi is one mile wide which seems “mighty wide”. It is a good read, but Oliver’s wife plays a minor role in this book and the books work better, in my opinion, when there is an ongoing exchange between them.
