SUZANNE went to the prom and said good-bye to Mrinalini (who she expects to see again at any minute). She went to a Mets Game with the exchange students and had many more “good-byes” to say. She also went on the senior class trip to Darien Lake.
MRINALINI: Everyone should have received a message by now and Carl’s wonderful pictures. Laura received an email from Germany and Mrinalini is now in Bangalore with her grandparents.
INDUCTION NEXT WEEK!Mark introduced his nephew, Christian Thompson who has already had many special experiences through his own talents and efforts both running and snowshoeing, including representing the United States in Italy and New Zealand. May these continue. I cannot due justice to all he has done and the experience of his championship race.
The Powers That Be
David Halberstam was a talented journalist and author. This book presents information about the powers of the media to form our opinions and also to steer the actions of our government starting early in the 20th century. There are so many ways to look at history besides individual perspectives. In the prelude, Halberstam gives a lot of attention to FDR because of his powerful use of the new medium of radio. We all know about the changes in our government at that time, but we may not have thought about:
Nor was this an isolated phenomenon. It was happening throughout the world. In Germany and in the Soviet Union, powerful highly centralized governments had taken power, and their very rise strengthened the coming of the centralized government in America.
So the coming of totalitarian states strengthened the American presidency, giving the President leverage which he used not just against the adversary states but against the American public, Congress, and press, arguing the needs of national security.
He was, of course, subtly but quite consciously elevating the importance of the press. If he wanted direct access to their readers, then they had to have direct access to him. He was more often than not going directly to the media rather than the Congress with information; and he put more energy into his press relations than into his congressional ones.
More to come…
