Today’s bulletin created by Judith Kip. Thanks, Judy!
Len Bjorkman, guest of Al Sunderwirth; Tari Coyne-Horton, guest of Kathy Vasilopoulis; John Feveryear, husband and guest of Faye Rafferty; Mary Lee, of Senator Libous’ staff; Senator Tom Libous; William Russell, new OACS superintendent and guest of Steve Lounsberry; and Kathy Vasilopoulis, today’s inductee.
Al Sunderwirth on July 16.
Carl and Carolyn led us in R-O-T-A-R-Y.
Orv fined those members who were not honored as unsung heroes or named Rotarian of the Year at his last meeting.
There were many happy people today. Among them were John and Faye who toured along the Hudson by bike; John Jones who toured New England by train; Carolyn who heard from Chuck and Carol Preston; and Annette who has survived her second bite from a feral cat.
Maria Dixson reminded members to sign up to walk or to purchase luminaries if you cannot be present. The event is on July 21 & 22.
Hal reminded members to sell tickets and to see him if they need more.
Orv inducted Kathy Vasilopoulis. Kathy teaches Spanish and French at O-A Middle School and was a Rotary exchange student to Brazil. She is the first new club member in this 2006-2007 Rotary year.
President Al introduced Senator Tom Libous who represents Broome, Chenango, and Tioga counties in Albany. The senator spoke of the recent floods, the destruction done to the area, the cooperation during the event, the cleanup underway, and the possibilities of helping some who lost property. He is in close contact with the governor’s office and with social service and state organizations which can help (or hinder) the recovery effort. He mentioned that in the next day or so the state may announce a plan to buy out properties where residents have weathered many floods, suffered damage this month, and do not wish to return to the properties. Efforts will be made to assist people to stay in the area. Senator Libous also said that he will work toward the easing of some DEC regulations which would open up the possibilities for dredging of rivers and streams. He mentioned ways in which service clubs and individual may help. Individuals may write state representatives and urge aid for farms, which have suffered. And there may be a role for service clubs in helping individual families who have lost a great deal and need help with housing, clothing, and rebuilding lives.
Thursday, July 13, Bob Fisher will be inducted at the breakfast meeting. Tuesdays, July 18 and 25 returning outbound exchange students will speak.
