GUESTS:

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO JEANNETTE

SUNSHINE:

We hope that Al Bingley is feeling well. Al left the meeting early.

MUSIC:

Carl and Wilma led us in a patriotic song (starting at the second verse) in recognition of Memorial Day. The ceremony was very nice yesterday and Michael Cernack made a very nice presentation. A little piece of trivia...One of the later verses of "America, the Beautiful" reads, "Thine Alabaster cities gleam undimmed by human tear" This was inspired by the Chicago exposition and all of the white buildings in 1893.

KAY NEWBERRY TREATED ALL OF US TO LUNCH FOR THE CONTRIBUTION THE CLUB MADE TO NORTH AVENUE BY PAINTING THE RAILINGS.

I hope to see the "Fantastics" and hear that both Wilma and Bill Nolis play roles in the production.

FINES: John Spencer

Carolyn Wright is pleased at all of the positive publicity Rotary is receiving

PROGRAM:

Laura introduced Nate McNamara and Josh Stangle who told about the trip that 46 students with 5 chaperones took to Western Europe. This was potentially a life-changing experience. It stimulated their desire to see more. In response to Orv’s question, Nate stated that he was surprised by the beauty of Italy (and he did not mention the women) and Josh was intrigued by the difference in life-styles. Nate also mentioned the importance of learning another language.

I was very impressed with the students and their presentation. I was also impressed with the material that they have been reading in their course.

50/50 Jose

Speaking of different cultures, I have been reading The Good Earth by Pearl Buck. Linda could not believe that I never read it before. This was a society in which daughters were often killed at birth and were seen as slaves to be sold. When we look at the stress of adapting to the rapid changes in our civilization, they are nothing compared to what this society has passed through in a couple of generations.
