GUESTS:

MUSIC:

Carl and Wilma led us in "The Get Together Song" and we were actually together

BOARD:

There will be a combined Board Meeting/Breakfast Meeting this Thursday

PAUL HARRIS DINNER:

It is this Friday night. If you can go and have not made a reservation, please contact Carolyn Galatzan no later than tomorrow. Pat Hansen and Laura Costello are being honored. Chuck Preston is being given a special pin. Chuck is now an honorary member. He became a Paul Harris Fellow in 1984 and has since sponsored 8 others.

The following day is our railing painting day. Quite a few people from the community are coming to join us and Carl has arranged for a number of Lockheed Martin employees to join us.

BIKE RALLY:

Al is arranging for a letter to go out over the signatures of current and retired Lockheed Martin employees asking the company to support the Bike Tioga. Al rode the bike to lunch (with a jacket and tie) that he rode to victory in the Chenango Senior Games this weekend.

RAFFLE TICKETS:

Hal is working to develop information for the back of our raffle tickets which will explain to those purchasing the tickets what their donations go towards. Jan will send a list of all that we have contributed cash to. We also want to list the significant projects to which we have contributed people-power.

CHAMBER GOLF TOURNAMENT:

Wayne announced that the Chamber of Commerce is having its first golf tournament as a fund-raiser. It will be on June 19, the day after the Strawberry Festival.

FINES:

Orv fined those who will not be at the dinner or who will not be painting on Saturday.

Bill and Irene had a great trip to Italy. I would love to hear more about it.

PROGRAM:

John Spencer introduced Wayne Clark who spoke about the 25th Strawberry Festival. (He did not know that Rotary and Kiwanis co-sponsored a shortcake booth in the early years.) The activities start on Thursday night. There will be 100 – 120 booths this year and an anticipated 10,000 attendees. This is the second year that Crowley’s will be a partner. Last year was their 100th anniversary. They are staying with us for this anniversary year of ours. The Festival was voted the third major attraction of the Southern Tier after the B. C. Open and the Balloon Rally (and this is the only one that is free.)

I am reading Middlesex, which I would not have read other than it was recommended to me. I am finding it to be an interesting read. The following statement caught my attention. "There is no evidence against genetic determinism more persuasive than the children of the rich."

And from Peter Bowler: Apophthegm n. highfalutin word for an epigram. Much preferred to the later, but easier to write than to say, in view of the problems presented by the central ph. Although the standard authorities permit the word to be pronounced ph-less, such a pronunciation would be extremely infra dig for a Superior Person, and should be eschewed in favor of the full version.
